HISTORY:

In 1982, World Impact opened the Los Angeles Christian School with kindergarten and first grade. Our students--most of whom came from single-parent, poverty-level homes--received a quality academic education in a uniquely secure and loving environment. The academic response from the children, and the parental support, were exceptional. Each successive year, a grade level was added.

The children who were bused from Watts were soon head and shoulders above their public school peers. Many academically surpassed their teenage brothers and sisters. However, the 75-minute bus ride one way to school from Watts was too long. Our Watts youth club children needed a Christian school in Watts.

World Impact acquired one-half acre of land next to the Imperial Courts Federal Housing Projects in Watts--one of the neediest communities in America--where World Impact missionaries have served for more than two decades. The Watts Christian School opened in September, 1994, with kindergarten and first grade, bringing high academic standards to impoverished families in Watts. Full capacity was reached at fifth grade.

BUILDING INNER-CITY LEADERS:

Instilling Moral Character
Judeo-Christian principles are taught in classes and are transmitted through the living curriculum of dedicated teachers. We help students to honor and respect their parents, and others in authority over them through experiencing mutual respect between the teachers and themselves. We stress an ethical lifestyle based on love and respect of others, free from cheating, lying, stealing and fighting.

Nurturing Self-Esteem
Students feel good about themselves when they are loved by others. They develop secure and healthy self-images by knowing they are respected and valuable. Discipline is fairly and consistently administered with the goal of instilling self-discipline so that students feel good about themselves. The instruction level is determined by the students' readiness and ability to grasp concepts.

Promoting Academic Competence
Enrollment is limited to 15 students per class. Students learn to comprehend what they read, solve mathematical problems, develop logical thinking skills, understand scientific processes and analyze historical and current events, and to communicate verbally and in writing. Students also learn basic computer skills.
